Canada has done it again. If you have been following our updates here on the Learnguage website, this won’t come as a surprise. French is once again the star of the show in Express Entry. On August 6, 2026, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) held yet another French-language proficiency draw, sending out 5,000 invitations to apply for permanent residence. The minimum CRS score needed this time was just 391, the lowest cutoff for this category since March 2025. Yes, you read that right. If your CRS score has been sitting around the 390s and you have strong French skills, this could finally be your moment.

As always, this category rewards candidates who can prove strong French ability, even when their overall CRS score is lower than what other draws demand. To qualify, candidates needed an active Express Entry profile, plus French test results showing at least NCLC 7 in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. This is the ninth French-language round of the year, and Canada has now given out 45,500 invitations through this one category alone in 2026. That makes French proficiency the second biggest source of invitations this year, sitting just behind the Canadian Experience Class.

If this feels familiar, that is because it is. Canada keeps returning to this well, and for good reason: the country wants more French speakers settling outside Quebec, and this category is one of its favourite tools to get there. The lesson has not changed since the last time we covered this topic: strong French skills remain one of the biggest advantages a candidate can hold in the Express Entry pool. Scores that would not stand a chance in other draws are suddenly enough to get an invitation, simply because French ability moves you to the front of the line.
